Description

This document is a structured transcription and thematic extraction from the novel Gentayangan by Intan Paramaditha. It categorizes and analyzes narrative data under three primary research questions (RQs): (1) Ethnic Chinese Discrimination, (2) Metafiction, and (3) Gender Dichotomy. Under RQ1, the document compiles key passages that depict the marginalization and traumatic memories of Chinese-Indonesians, particularly through the character Dian Carolina Halim. The analysis highlights events around the 1998 riots, cultural erasure, and postcolonial identity conflict, interpreted through personal and collective memory. Several pages, especially 119–126 and 485–487, contain deeply reflective narration of past violence, repressed trauma, and social silence surrounding ethnic and gendered violence. In RQ2, the metafictional elements are noted, such as the use of alternative storylines, direct reader address, and narrative self-awareness. These techniques blur the boundaries between fiction and reality, allowing the novel to reflect on its own storytelling process. RQ3 focuses on the protagonist’s gender identity and resistance to traditional roles. The novel contrasts socially accepted feminine ideals with a cosmopolitan, rebellious female subjectivity. Notable entries include reflections on lifestyle choices, feminist resistance, and symbolic quotes such as "Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere." The document also provides both Indonesian and English transcriptions of the selected quotes, allowing comparative analysis and highlighting the novel’s multilingual and transnational aspects.
