Radiographic and Laboratory Dataset for Fractal Dimension and Cortical Indices of the Mandible in Hypercholesterolaemia
Description
This dataset contains radiographic and laboratory data related to a retrospective study investigating the relationship between serum cholesterol levels and mandibular bone structure using fractal dimension (FD), lacunarity, and cortical indices (MCW, PMI). The dataset includes patients age, sex, FD, lacunarity, MCW, PMI and cholesterol measurements. All radiomorfometric measurements were taken from panoramic radiographs using ImageJ and FracLac. All personal identifiers were removed prior to publication. The dataset supports transparency and reproducibility in dental radiographic research involving systemic metabolic conditions.

Steps to reproduce
1. Open the panoramic radiographs using ImageJ software (version 1.54 or later). 2. Define the regions of interest (ROIs) in the anterior, premolar, and molar regions of the mandible (64×64 px) using the rectangular selection tool. 3. Apply preprocessing: Gaussian blur (sigma 35), subtract from original, adjust grayscale (128), binarize, erode, dilate, invert, and skeletonize. 4. Use the FracLac plugin (version 2.5) to calculate fractal dimension and lacunarity for each ROI using the box-counting method. (box sizes: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 32, 64) 5. Record FD and lacunarity values for each anatomical region. 6. For MCW and PMI: Measure the cortical width of the jaw at the mental foramen and calculate the PMI as the ratio of the distance measured from the MCW and the mental foramen to the base. 7. Organize data by patient group (based on serum cholesterol level). 8. Assess the distribution of variables using normality tests (e.g., Shapiro–Wilk or Kolmogorov–Smirnov). If the data are normally distributed, use one-way ANOVA to compare groups. If normality is not met, apply the Kruskal–Wallis test followed by appropriate post hoc analysis.
