An Acoustic Study of Stops in the Chenghai Dialect
Description
This dataset accompanies the research paper entitled “An Acoustic Study of Stops in the Chenghai Dialect.” Chenghai dialect, a branch of the Chaoshan sub-group of Southern Min, exhibits rich phonetic features in its stop consonant system. This study employs experimental phonetic methods to systematically investigate the acoustic properties of stops in Chenghai dialect, with the aim of providing precise acoustic evidence for the phonological description of this under-documented variety and contributing to the typological study of stop consonants in Chinese dialects. Fieldwork data were collected during the summer of 2026. All speakers are native residents of Chenghai, with balanced distributions in age and gender. Recordings were conducted in a quiet environment. The dataset includes the following materials: wav.zip: recordings of stop-initial syllables produced by each speaker; textgrid.zip: manually annotated in Praat, marking Voice Onset Time (VOT) and closure duration (GAP). data analysis.xlsx: extracted and analyzed acoustic measures for stops, including Voice Onset Time (VOT) and closure duration (GAP). This dataset is suitable for researchers in phonetics, dialectology, and experimental linguistics for purposes such as comparative analysis of stop acoustics, quantitative studies of sound change in Chinese dialects, and cross-dialectal or Mandarin-dialect comparisons.
