Description

Oxyporhamphus similis (smallwing flyingfish) is a tropical epipelagic species belonging to the family Exocoetidae (order Beloniformes). In this study, we sequenced and characterized the complete mitochondrial genome of O. similis for the first time. The circular genome is 16,529 bp in length (GenBank accession No. PZ578608) and consists of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes (12S and 16S), and one control region (D-loop). The overall base composition is A 29.09%, T 27.31%, C 27.03%, and G 16.57%, with an A+T content of 56.40%. All PCGs use ATG as the start codon except COI, which uses GTG. Six PCGs terminate with complete stop codons (TAA or TAG), while seven PCGs (ND2, COII, ATP6, COIII, ND3, ND4, and Cytb) end with incomplete stop codons (T- or TA-), which are presumably completed by post-transcriptional polyadenylation. All tRNA genes can be folded into typical cloverleaf secondary structures except tRNA-Ser(AGY), which lacks the dihydrouridine arm. Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated 13 PCGs of 19 Beloniformes species using the neighbor-joining (NJ) method placed O. similis within the family Exocoetidae, forming a well-supported clade with its congener Oxyporhamphus micropterus. This placement is consistent with previous morphological and molecular evidence that supports the inclusion of Oxyporhamphus within Exocoetidae, and reinforces the hypothesis that flying fishes evolved from halfbeak-like ancestors
