Self-compassion, mindful eating and emotional appetite in university students (Türkiye): dataset
Description
Anonymised dataset of a cross-sectional study on self-compassion, mindful eating and emotional appetite among 559 university students (353 women, 206 men; mean age 21.78 ± 2.40 years) enrolled at Iğdır University, Türkiye. Data were collected in May–June 2026 in researcher-supervised sessions using a Google Forms questionnaire. The file contains demographic variables (gender, education level, smoking, current dieting, self-reported weight and height, BMI), subscale and total scores of the Emotional Appetite Questionnaire (EMAQ), item-level responses and subscale/total scores of the Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ), and item-level responses and the total score of the 11-item Turkish Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form (SCS-SF). Two implausible self-reported body weights were corrected as evident typing errors, and EMAQ subscale scores exceeding the theoretical maximum owing to an export coding error were truncated to the maximum value; both procedures are described in the README. The dataset supports the article "Self-compassion and emotional appetite in young adults: The mediating role of mindful eating" (submitted to Appetite). Ethics approval: Iğdır University Non-Interventional Clinical Research Ethics Committee (06.05.2026, decision no. 27/7). No personal identifiers are included.

Descriptive statistics, independent-samples t tests (with Cohen's d), Pearson correlations with Fisher-z 95% confidence intervals, and simple mediation (PROCESS Model 4 logic: OLS regressions with BMI and gender as covariates; indirect effect tested with 5,000 bootstrap resamples) can be reproduced directly from the CSV. The exploratory moderated mediation adds gender × self-compassion and gender × mindful eating interaction terms (mean-centred predictors) to separate regression models. Harman's single-factor test uses an unrotated principal component analysis of the 30 MEQ items, the 11 SCS-SF items and the four EMAQ subscale scores (45 indicators). Analyses in the article were run in IBM SPSS 23.0; variable definitions and scoring rules are given in the README.
