Quantitative Sensory Testing in a Porcine Neuritis Model
Description
Domestic swine underwent a neuritis induction surgery targeting a unilateral common peroneal nerve (CPN), where 3 segments of 3-0 silk suture were tied tightly around the CPN. Prior to, and following surgery, the subjects were evaluated on a weekly basis using a "feather test" and an "algometer test." Additionally, at necropsy, in four animals, muscles of the lower leg were dissected and weighed to identify differences compared to their contralateral side. Domestic swine underwent a neuritis induction surgery targeting a unilateral common peroneal nerve (CPN), where 3 segments of 3-0 silk suture were tied tightly around the CPN. Prior to, and following surgery, the subjects were evaluated on a weekly basis using a "feather test" and an "algometer test." Each test focused on 5 bilateral dermatomes, with testing taking place during feeding. The feather test consisted of 3 consecutive swipes of a turkey feather to each dermatome, with the subject's reaction to each swipe scored on a 0 (no reaction) to 3 (strong reaction, such as a kick or walking away). The algometer test evaluated the pressure at which the subject withdrew from a force (lb) applied to each dermatome. Additionally, at necropsy, in four animals, muscles of the lower leg were dissected and weighed to identify differences compared to their contralateral side.
