Description

This dataset contains the input files required to reproduce HYDRUS-2D simulations of herbicide transport in five railway embankments in Germany under projected climate conditions. The simulations were developed to assess how changes in recharge dynamics associated with climate change may affect herbicide storage and downward migration through railway embankment materials. The dataset includes site-specific HYDRUS-2D model input files for the railway embankments at Ingolstadt, Krefeld, Burgdorf, Weinböhla, and Oftersheim. For each site, simulations were forced using downscaled climate-projection data representing two greenhouse-gas concentration pathways: RCP2.6 and RCP4.5. The simulation period covers 30 years. Input files are provided for four herbicide-related solutes with contrasting transport and transformation behaviour: Glyphosate Aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) Flazasulfuron Flumioxazin The files include the HYDRUS-2D project configuration and associated inputs needed to run the corresponding site-, scenario-, and compound-specific simulations. Depending on the model structure, these include domain geometry and material definitions, initial and boundary conditions, atmospheric forcing, soil hydraulic parameters, solute-transport parameters, reaction and transformation settings, and simulation-control files. The dataset supports reproduction, inspection, and further development of the model simulations reported in the associated study: Pedrosa, L., Chamorro, A., Scheytt, T. Projecting climate-change effects on herbicide migration in railway embankments. Journal of Contaminant Hydrology [manuscript submitted / add final bibliographic details after publication]. The data are intended for research on contaminant hydrology, herbicide fate and transport, railway-infrastructure pollution, unsaturated-zone modelling, climate-change impacts on groundwater vulnerability, and site-specific environmental risk assessment. Users should run the simulations using a compatible version of HYDRUS-2D/3D and should cite both this dataset and the associated publication when reusing the files.

Steps to reproduce

Download and extract the complete dataset, retaining the original folder structure. Select one model folder representing a site, climate scenario, and compound: Site_RCP26-or-RCP45_Compound Example: Krefeld_RCP45_AMPA Open HYDRUS-2D/3D using the same or a compatible version stated in the README. Open the project file in the selected folder. If the archive contains only HYDRUS input files, import the .IN files into a compatible HYDRUS project. Before running, verify that the selected project corresponds to the intended: Site: Burgdorf, Ingolstadt, Krefeld, Oftersheim, or Weinböhla Climate scenario: RCP2.6 or RCP4.5 Compound: glyphosate, AMPA, flazasulfuron, or flumioxazin Confirm that the model includes the correct mesh, material properties, initial and boundary conditions, atmospheric forcing, herbicide application settings, and solute transport/reaction parameters. Run the simulation using the HYDRUS calculation command. Do not change the original input files if exact reproduction is required. After successful completion, use the HYDRUS output files to evaluate water fluxes, stored solute mass, concentration distributions, and cumulative leaching. Check water and solute mass balances before interpreting results. The dataset comprises 40 simulations: five railway embankments × two climate scenarios × four herbicide-related compounds.
