Ultrasonic immersion scanning system (UISS)
Description
HardwareX: Ultrasonic immersion scanning system for automated field mapping and transducer characterization
Files
Steps to reproduce
We present UISS, an open-source ultrasonic immersion testing system that (a) uses a three-axis stepper-motor gantry for automated, high-precision hydrophone positioning, (b) supports single-point, 1D, 2D, and 3D scan modes across a working volume of up to 250 × 250 × 250 mm³, (c) displays acoustic field parameters in real time with hydrophone calibration correction applied, (d) regulates the acoustic environment via water temperature control, filtration, and degassing, and (e) is built almost entirely from off-the-shelf parts for straightforward assembly and low-cost replication (~$10K). Positioning accuracy and repeatability were validated against an independent 3D Snapshot sensor (Gocator 3200) and through direct acoustic field mapping, while the signal-processing pipeline was verified using simulated acquisitions of arbitrary test signals. Together, these results confirm that AWaTS can reliably map ultrasound fields and support transducer calibration workflows at a fraction of the cost of commercial alternatives, while remaining fully open for adaptation by other research groups. Software will be available upon request.
