Description

This Excel dataset compiles the 163 scientific articles classified and analyzed in the systematic review titled "Alternative applications of water treatment plant sludge: a systematic review." The purpose of this dataset is to provide a comprehensive list of the core literature examined in the review, facilitating further research, bibliometric analysis, or meta-analysis related to the reuse and beneficial application of Water Treatment Plant Sludge (WTPS). The spreadsheet contains the following four columns for each of the 163 articles: authors, year, title and journal.

The 163 articles compiled in this dataset were systematically selected from a bibliographic survey conducted in the Web of Science (WOS) database, covering publications from 2020 to 2024. The initial search employed a detailed set of keywords targeting Water Treatment Plant Sludge (WTPS), such as 'water treatment sludge' OR 'alum sludge.' A strict exclusion filter was applied to remove irrelevant results, specifically those related to groundwater or wastewater treatment sludge ('wastewater treatment sludge' OR 'sewage sludge'). Subsequently, only articles focused on the reuse or recycling of sludge from surface water treatment plants for urban supply were selected. Publications that did not propose reuse strategies or focused on other sludge types were excluded. Additionally, during the classification process, especially concerning the type of thermal treatment applied to the WTPS, studies utilizing non-exclusively thermal treatments (such as chemical activation or other modifying processes) were systematically excluded from the final review, ensuring the 163 articles strictly adhered to the defined scope.
