This collection comprises 16 files supporting a study of administrative boundaries, geography, and school quality across Indian subdistricts (2021–2023). It combines subdistrict-level school performance data, night-light economic activity, geographic and agro-climatic covariates, and administrative boundary indicators for approximately 5,900–7,250 subdistricts across India's states and union territories. School performance and night lights. final_pgi_nl_{2021,2022,2023}_logic_filled.csv report the Performance Grading Index (PGI) — an official six-category measure of school-system quality (Learning Outcomes, Effective Classroom Transaction, Infrastructure & Entitlements, School Safety & Child Protection, Digital Learning, and Governance) — alongside matched night-light intensity (VIIRS-derived), by subdistrict and year. updated_new_subdistrict_pgi_report_{2021,2022,2023}.csv extend this with school-level composition: government/private enrolment splits, student counts, and caste-category (SC/ST/OBC/General) enrolment shares. Geographic and environmental covariates. elevation_pc11subdist.csv and tri_pc11subdist.csv provide elevation and terrain-ruggedness statistics; vcf_pc11subdist.csv provides annual tree-cover (Vegetation Continuous Fields) estimates. Subdistrict_aggregate_V2.csv is a quarterly panel of remote-sensing variables — rainfall, evapotranspiration, the Palmer Drought Severity Index, NDVI, land-cover shares, and atmospheric measures — derived via Google Earth Engine. Administrative and socioeconomic data. scheduled_areas_by_subdistrict_india.csv records Fifth/Sixth Schedule status and PESA implementation dates. india_subdistrict_interstate_boundary.csv flags whether each subdistrict shares an interstate boundary and identifies neighboring states. pc11_vd_clean_pc11subdist.csv (Census 2011 Village Directory) provides population, SC/ST shares, infrastructure access, and distance to subdistrict/district headquarters. antyodaya_pc11subdist.csv provides household-level welfare indicators, including BPL card coverage. subdist_pc11_pop_area_key.csv gives population and land area for weighting and density calculations. Spatial data. shrug-pc11subdist-poly-shp.zip contains subdistrict polygon boundaries (SHRUG, PC11 census vintage) for mapping and spatial-adjacency calculations. Identifiers. Most files are keyed by Census 2011 (PC11) state/district/subdistrict codes; PGI-derived files are keyed by subdistrict/district/state name and require name-based matching to the PC11-coded files. Users should be aware this matching is imperfect for some states due to differing administrative granularity between the school-reporting system and the census.
