Description

This dataset contains responses collected to assess sedentary behavior among university students using the Hindi-translated version of the Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ). Sedentary behavior is defined as any waking activity characterized by an energy expenditure ≤1.5 metabolic equivalents (METs) while in a sitting, reclining, or lying posture. The increasing prevalence of sedentary lifestyles among students has emerged as a significant public health concern due to its association with adverse physical and mental health outcomes. The dataset was generated as part of a cross-sectional study conducted among university students. The primary aim was to evaluate the level and patterns of sedentary behavior and to examine the applicability of the Hindi version of the SBQ in this population. The questionnaire includes items assessing time spent in various sedentary activities such as watching television, using a computer, reading, and sitting during transportation, separately for weekdays and weekends. Data were collected using a structured self-reported questionnaire. Variables included demographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender), academic-related information, and detailed sedentary behavior measures. The dataset is provided in both native IBM SPSS Statistics (.sav) format and a universally accessible (.csv/.xlsx) format to facilitate reuse by researchers. A codebook is included to describe all variables, coding schemes, and scoring procedures used in the dataset. The dataset may be used for secondary analysis, validation studies, or comparative research on sedentary behavior among student populations. All data have been anonymized to ensure participant confidentiality and comply with ethical research standards.

Study Design and Participants: A cross-sectional study design was used. University students were recruited using a convenience sampling method. Inclusion criteria included currently enrolled students who provided informed consent. Questionnaire Preparation: The Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ) was translated into Hindi following standard translation procedures, including forward translation, back translation, and content validation by subject experts. Data Collection: Participants completed the Hindi version of the SBQ through a self-administered questionnaire. The instrument assessed time spent in various sedentary activities (e.g., television viewing, computer use, reading, and transportation sitting time) separately for weekdays and weekends. Data Entry: Collected responses were entered into IBM SPSS Statistics. Each variable was labeled, and appropriate value coding was applied as per the questionnaire structure. Data Cleaning and Processing: Missing values were checked and handled appropriately Data were screened for inconsistencies and outliers Sedentary time variables were computed (e.g., total sedentary time per day/week) Variable Coding and Scoring: Sedentary behavior variables were calculated based on reported hours/minutes for each activity. Separate scores for weekdays and weekends were generated, and total sedentary time was derived. Data Export: The final dataset was saved in native IBM SPSS Statistics (.sav) format and exported to (.csv/.xlsx) formats for broader accessibility. Documentation: A detailed codebook describing variable names, labels, coding schemes, and scoring procedures was created and included with the dataset.
