Description

This mixed-methods dataset documents quantitative and qualitative evidence on astrotourism development in the Bandung region, Indonesia. The quantitative component contains anonymized survey data from 373 respondents, including synthetic IDs, sex, generalized age groups, residence duration, seven interest indicators, four specific interest variables, and five visit-challenge variables. Detailed location, education, and marital-status fields were removed to reduce disclosure risk. The qualitative component contains 122 anonymized statement-level records from an expert-informed stakeholder focus group involving researchers, an astronomy expert, government representatives, village stakeholders, tourism businesses, and a photography community. The transcript was processed using a lightly edited verbatim approach. Ceremonial content, repetition, logistics, direct identifiers, and unresolved fragments were removed, while substantive experiences, concerns, disagreements, recommendations, and uncertainties were retained. The qualitative data cover existing initiatives, tourism products, weather, light pollution, guide capacity, infrastructure, collaboration, governance, marketing, environmental protection, and local economic opportunities. Both components may be analysed independently or integrated in mixed-methods research, although survey respondents and FGD participants represent different groups. Qualitative claims are participant accounts and are not independently verified.

This dataset was generated through a convergent parallel mixed-methods study conducted in Greater Bandung, Indonesia, between December 2025 and March 2026. Quantitative data were collected from 373 Bandung City residents selected purposively based on residence and interest in outdoor tourism. Before completing the questionnaire, respondents received a short explanation and scenario describing astrotourism. The instrument measured sociodemographic characteristics, product attributes, seven interest items, five challenge items, and ticket-price preference as an ordinal proxy for willingness to pay. Responses were cleaned, coded, anonymized, and in Ms Excel (XLSX). For the public version, district, education, and marital-status variables were removed, age was generalized, and residence duration was grouped. Qualitative data were collected through a focus group involving government, village, destination-management, tourism, community, photography, and astronomy stakeholders. The discussion addressed opportunities, feasibility, interpretation, environmental constraints, and governance. The transcript was cleaned using a lightly edited verbatim protocol, anonymized with participant codes, segmented into meaningful statements, and reduced by removing ceremonial, repetitive, logistical, and non-substantive content.
