Description

This dataset contains the research data underlying the review article "Conditional nitrogen-cycling cascades from land to ocean during La Niña: Event pathways and estuarine modulation" submitted to Journal of Hydrology. Files included: - Table S1.xlsx: Sheet "S1a LaNina classification" — Annual La Niña phase classification (developing, persistent, decaying, or non-La Niña) for each hydrological year during 1992-2018, based on the NOAA Climate Prediction Center Oceanic Niño Index. Sheet "S1b Standardized runoff Z" — Standardized annual runoff anomalies (Z = (Q - mean(Q)) / sd(Q)) for the Yellow, Yangtze, Pearl, and Columbia Rivers during 1992-2018. - Table S2.xlsx: Sheet "S2a Metadata sources" — Data sources, monitoring locations, harmonization decisions, accounting periods, and principal limitations for each river. Sheet "S2b Runoff TN values" — Annual runoff (km3 yr-1) and total-nitrogen loads (10^4 t N yr-1) for the Yellow, Yangtze, and Columbia Rivers during 1992-2020. - Figure S1 data.zip: Monthly precipitation anomalies in the Changjiang estuarine region derived from ERA5-Land, paired with the preceding NDJ Oceanic Niño Index for exploratory comparison. - README.txt: Variable definitions, units, data sources, and cross-references to manuscript figures and tables. These data support the basin- and phase-dependent runoff analysis (Fig. 1), the runoff-TN covariation assessment (Fig. 2), and the exploratory precipitation-ENSO comparison (Fig. S1) presented in the manuscript.

Steps to reproduce

1. Figure 1 (basin- and phase-dependent runoff anomalies) - Open Table S1.xlsx, Sheet "S1b Standardized runoff Z" - Group years by Annual class (Developing, Persistent, Decaying, Non--La Niña) - For each river (Yellow, Yangtze, Pearl, Columbia), compute boxplots of the standardized runoff Z values by phase - Note: Z = (Q - mean(Q)) / sd(Q), computed separately for each basin over 1992-2018 2. Figure 2 (annual runoff and TN loads) - Open Table S2.xlsx, Sheet "S2b Runoff TN values" - Plot grouped bars of annual runoff (km3 yr-1) and total-nitrogen loads (10^4 t N yr-1) for Yellow, Yangtze, and Columbia Rivers during 1992-2020 - Color-code bars: orange for La Niña-associated years (Developing + Persistent + Decaying combined), grey for non-La Niña years - Note: the Pearl River TN series is spatially restricted and was not used in Fig. 2 3. Figure S1 (exploratory precipitation-ENSO comparison) - This is an exploratory analysis. Raw monthly pairing data were processed directly from publicly available datasets during manuscript preparation and are not separately archived here. - To reproduce: obtain monthly precipitation for the Changjiang estuarine region from ERA5-Land (Muñoz Sabater, 2019) and the NDJ Oceanic Niño Index from NOAA CPC (2026) - Compute standardized monthly precipitation anomalies, pair with the preceding NDJ ONI, and plot month-specific scatter plots with least-squares fits for the La Niña-year subset - See Figure S1 metadata.txt in Figure S1 data.zip for full data source details
