Chemical composition of matoa (Pometia pinnata) seed and peel
Description
Matoa (Pometia pinnata) is a tropical fruit tree with significant potential due to its nutritional, economic, and ecological benefits. The sweet, juicy fruit is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, making it a valuable food source in regions where it grows, such as Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Economically, matoa can provide income for local farmers through fresh fruit sales or processed products like jams and juices. Additionally, the tree supports agroforestry systems, improving soil health and biodiversity while offering shade and timber. With proper cultivation and promotion, matoa could become a more widely recognized and sustainable crop. The seeds and peel of the matoa fruit has significant promise as feed for ruminant cattle. The crude fiber level in both seed and peel is significantly elevated, and they also possess a comparatively high fat content.

Steps to reproduce
Matoa fruit was harvested in 2024 during the dry season. The matoa fruit is separated into the flesh, seeds, and peel. The seeds and peel are dried under sunlight for 3 days and then followed by oven drying at 60°C for 8 hours. After that, both materials are ground to a sieve size of 2 mm before proceeding with proximate and Van Soest analysis.
