Dataset on Knowledge, Practices, and Raw Milk Consumption Among Dairy Industry Workers in Atlántico, Colombia.
Description
This dataset contains survey-based data collected from workers involved in different stages of the dairy production chain in the municipalities of Repelón and Manatí, located in the department of Atlántico, Colombia. The data were obtained through structured, interviewer-administered questionnaires conducted in July 2024, targeting individuals working in milk production, processing, distribution, or sales. The instrument included sections on demographic characteristics, occupational activities, prior training, awareness of potential risks associated with raw milk, consumption practices, frequency of consumption, and self-reported reasons for consuming or not consuming raw milk. All responses were recorded manually during the interviews and later digitized into a standardized spreadsheet format. The dataset is organized as a single Excel file containing raw, unmodified responses. Variables include municipality of residence, gender, age, educational level, work area within the dairy industry, years of experience, previous training, knowledge of raw milk risks, type of perceived risks, consumption status, consumption frequency, and stated motivations. Additional summary tables describing frequency distributions, age ranges, and cross-tabulated indicators are included within the same file to facilitate navigation and understanding of the dataset structure. These data provide a detailed overview of demographic, occupational, and behavioral characteristics of dairy industry workers in two rural municipalities. The dataset can be reused for comparative analyses, occupational health studies, food safety monitoring, risk communication research, and the development of educational or intervention strategies in similar agricultural or rural contexts. The structure and level of detail allow researchers to explore associations between demographic factors, work activities, training history, and raw milk consumption behaviors, as well as to replicate or extend analyses in future studies.

The dataset was generated through a cross-sectional field study conducted in July 2024 in the municipalities of Repelón and Manatí (Atlántico, Colombia). Data were collected using structured, interviewer-administered questionnaires applied face-to-face to workers involved in different stages of the dairy production chain (milk production, processing, distribution, and sales). The questionnaire instrument was designed based on national food safety guidelines, previous studies on raw milk consumption, and validated tools used in rural public health research. It included sections on demographic characteristics, occupational activities, training history, awareness of raw milk–related risks, consumption practices, consumption frequency, and reasons for consumption or non-consumption. Participants were selected based on the following inclusion criteria: being an active worker in the dairy chain, being 18 years or older, and residing or working in the study area at the time of data collection. Interviews were conducted by trained field personnel in workplaces such as farms, collection points, and commercial establishments. Responses were manually recorded on paper forms during the interviews. Completed questionnaires were reviewed for completeness and consistency before being digitized into a standardized Microsoft Excel (2021) file. No data normalization, imputation, or transformation procedures were applied, and the dataset preserves the original recorded responses. Data processing was limited to the generation of descriptive summary tables and figures using Microsoft Excel. No additional statistical software, programming tools, or automated workflows were used in the creation of the dataset.
