Description

Perfectionism is an evident, although complex characteristic, which may influence young adults’ psychological development. The present cross-sectional, observational and quantitative nature study aims at investigating the influence of parenting styles in people’s perfectionist traits. Data were collected by means of APS-R, PBI and PAQ scales with 102 undergraduate students aged 18 to 24 years old. In order to analyze the data, descriptive and inferential statistics were used so that it could be possible to carry out correlation and regression analysis. Results of the analysis have shown moderate correlation between variables related to the maladaptative perfectionism and authoritative parenting style, as well as the prevalence of authoritative parenting style towards their young adult daughter, as well as how mothers’s background knowledge influences the use of authoritative parenting practices. Nevertheless, maladaptative perfectionism is better related to authoritative parenting style than to adaptive perfectionism.

Procedures To achieve the research objectives, three scales were collectively administered to a sample of 134 psychology students from a private university center located in the interior of Paraná. All participants signed the Informed Consent Form (ICF), which informed them about the research objectives and the importance of their participation, in addition to granting formal consent for the use of their data, without which participation was not allowed. The project was previously approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Centro Universitário Campo Real (CEP Campo Real), under protocol number 6.998.819. Participants The population chosen for this research consisted of university students between 18 and 24 years old, of both sexes, raised by both biological parents and enrolled in the psychology program at a private university center located in the interior of Paraná. The initial sample included 134 students. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria mentioned above, the final sample consisted of 102 participants. This delimitation aimed to ensure the homogeneity of the sample, focusing exclusively on family dynamics involving biological parents and their children. This was necessary to maintain consistency and relevance of the results, as family relationships, particularly those between biological parents and their children, are the central focus of this investigation. Instruments The selected scales were: Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (APS-R; Brazilian version) (Soares et al., 2020), Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ; Buri, 1991; adaptation by Sarriera and Boeckel, 2005), and Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI; Brazilian version) (Hauck et al., 2006). In addition to the scales, an initial questionnaire was applied to collect sociodemographic data. It is worth noting that the scales used are not restricted to psychologists and are self-report instruments, completed directly by the participants without the need for an administrator.
