Motor reserve in healthy controls

Description

This dataset includes demographical and cognitive data of 100 healthy controls divided in young (20-50 years) and old (50-70 years) individuals. Motor performance was assessed using a sensor-engineered glove that records the contact events between the thumb and the four fingers (Index → Middle → Ring → Little [IRML sequence]) on each hand independently, providing finger-level timing parameters for each sequence of taps. Each participant performed four motor tasks, each in three hand conditions (right-hand only, left-hand only, bilateral), for a total of 12 acquisitions per subject. All acquisitions had a duration of 60 seconds. Participants wore the glove on both hands throughout the session. T asks were performed in a fixed order: - Self-Paced (SPM): participants tapped repeatedly the four fingers in the IMRL sequence (index → middle → ring → little) at a self-chosen comfortable rhythm. - Maximum Velocity (MaxV): the same IMRL sequence was performed at the participant's maximum achievable rate. - Synchronization to a metronome (Metro): the same IMRL sequence was performed in synchrony with an auditory pacer at 2 Hz. - Continuation (CONT): the same IMRL sequence was performed in synchrony with the 2 Hz metronome for the first 30 s; the metronome then ceased and participants continued tapping at the learned rate for an additional 30 s without auditory feedback. For each task and condition, the device extracted the following parameters per finger and per hand: touch duration (TD), inter-tapping interval (ITI), tapping rate, the ratio TD/ITI (a duty-cycle index of contact relative to interval), the count of correctly executed sequences and total taps, and (for tasks with the metronome) the time error of each tap relative to the closest pacing tone (TE), its absolute value (TE_abs), and the percentage of advance vs. delay taps. For bilateral conditions in the metronome and continuation tasks, the device additionally computed inter-hand interval (IHI) onset and offset between corresponding finger taps of the two hands. The study has been registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov database (NCT07634055).
