Description

Space maintainers are orthodontic devices that prevent space closure caused by the premature loss of a deciduous tooth. The objective of this research was to determine the eruption effectiveness of permanent teeth following the placement of unilateral space maintainers in patients who attended the Dr. René Puig Bentz Dental Clinic during the period 2016-2021. the study results were as follows: the estimated eruption age of the permanent tooth, following the placement of unilateral space maintainers, ranged between six and 48 months, taking longer in males, who represented 58% of the cases. The need for placing another space maintainer was 100% in the case of intra-alveolar maintainers and 10.53% for band and loop maintainers. It was evidenced that in the case of intra-alveolar maintainers, after the eruption of the first permanent molar, in the absence of the second deciduous molar, it is necessary to preserve the space for the second premolar. The design of the form for recording clinical and radiographic controls of the space maintainers was created, reviewed, and accepted by the pediatric dentistry area. Thus, this research concluded that unilateral space maintainers, both intra-alveolar and band and loop, are necessary after the premature loss of a deciduous molar for the correct eruption of permanent teeth.
