Aging-Friendly Interaction Design (AFID): A Bibliometric Analysis of WoS and CNKI (1999–2025)

To comprehensively analyze the research trends in Aging-Friendly Interaction Design (AFID), data from the Web of Science (WoS) and CNKI databases were systematically collated and analyzed. The final search date was set as January 15, 2025. Given that the CNKI search engine supports synonym and semantic expansion, the advanced search topic terms were set to "交互设计" (Interaction Design) and "老年人" (Elderly), yielding an initial 908 papers. These were then manually screened based on their titles. To be included, the titles had to contain aging-related terms such as "适老化" (aging-friendly), "养老" (elder care), "助老" (elderly assistance), "老龄化" (aging), or "老年用户" (elderly users), and simultaneously include terms related to interaction design research objects, such as "交互" (interaction), "界面设计" (interface design), "人机交互" (human–computer interaction), or "APP设计" (app design). This process resulted in a final sample of 320 papers. For the English literature search, multiple strategies were tested to ensure both coverage and accuracy, ultimately leading to the selection of the WoS Core Collection. WoS's Topic search automatically matches word stems, synonyms, variant phrases, and conceptually related terms, providing robust semantic coverage. The citation indexes were restricted to the Science Citation Index Expanded (1998–present), the Social Sciences Citation Index (2006–present), and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (2015–present). Using the topic search string "Interaction Design" AND "Elderly", 1,995 records were retrieved. Subsequently, titles were manually screened to retain literature that simultaneously contained interaction design-related concepts (e.g., "Interaction Design," "Human–Computer Interaction," "User Interface Design," "Human–Robot Interaction") and keywords related to the elderly population (e.g., "Age-Friendly," "Older Adults," "Elderly People," "Senior Citizens"). This yielded a final set of 190 papers highly relevant to the theme of aging-friendly interaction design.
