Children's toothpaste listings on Turkish e-commerce platforms: fluoride content, age-appropriateness, and label information
Description
TITLE Children's toothpaste listings on Turkish e-commerce platforms: fluoride content, age-appropriateness, and label information (dataset) DESCRIPTION This dataset accompanies a cross-sectional content analysis of children's toothpaste products listed on three major Turkish e-commerce platforms (Trendyol, Hepsiburada, and N11). Each row is one unique product retained after eligibility screening and cross-platform de-duplication. Variables cover product identification, stated fluoride status and concentration, stated target age, safety and usage information, marketing claims, and a derived fluoride-age appropriateness code assessed against the 2019 policy document of the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD). DATA COLLECTION Collection window: 4-12 July 2026. Sampling: on each platform, listings were retrieved using the search terms "çocuk diş macunu" (children's toothpaste) and "bebek diş macunu" (baby toothpaste) with the relevant category filter, then sorted by each platform's best-seller ranking. The first 100 eligible listings per platform were screened (N11: all 73 available), giving 273 screened listings. After exclusions and cross-platform de-duplication, 236 unique products remained for analysis. Only information shown within the product listing (title, description, specifications table, product images) was coded; external sources and user-generated content were not used. Absent information was recorded as "not stated" rather than inferred. FILES - childrens_toothpaste_ecommerce_dataset.csv : main dataset, 236 rows, 23 variables (UTF-8) - data_dictionary.csv : variable names, descriptions, value sets - README.txt : this file - LICENSE.txt : licence terms LANGUAGE NOTE Standardised categorical variables are given in English. Four variables ending in "_raw" preserve the original Turkish listing wording (fluoride status, target age, other claims) and coder observations, so the source text remains available for verification and reanalysis. Steps to reproduce
Listings for children's toothpaste were retrieved from three major Turkish e-commerce platforms (Trendyol, Hepsiburada, N11) between 4 and 12 July 2026. On each platform the search terms "çocuk diş macunu" and "bebek diş macunu" were entered with the relevant category filter, and results were sorted by best-seller ranking. The first 100 eligible listings per platform were screened (N11: all 73 available), giving 273 screened listings. After excluding ineligible and duplicate listings and consolidating products sold on more than one platform, 236 unique products remained. Only information shown within the product listing (title, description, specifications table, product images) was coded; absent information was recorded as "not stated". Standardised categorical variables are given in English; variables ending in "_raw" preserve the original Turkish listing wording. Fluoride concentration and target age were assessed against the 2019 EAPD policy document. Analyses were performed in Python 3.12.3 (SciPy 1.17.1).
