A Governorate-Level Index of Biological Endowment in Oman
Description
This dataset is the complete evidence base for a governorate-level index of biological endowment covering all 11 governorates of the Sultanate of Oman across five domains: terrestrial and coastal, agricultural, livestock, microbial and marine. It was assembled entirely from open monitoring records, with no new fieldwork. It contains: 769,016 GBIF occurrence records reduced to a governorate-resolved species register of 6,269 named species and 12,900 governorate-species observations; 2,226 marine species from OBIS over a purpose-built non-overlapping partition of Oman's territorial sea; all 5,081 Oman-associated NCBI BioSample records with a geographic-resolution audit independently replicated in the European Nucleotide Archive; 59 protected-area polygons from the August 2026 World Database on Protected Areas joined spatially to governorate boundaries; governorate production series for crops, dates, red meat, honey and aflaj from the Omani Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources; population series from the National Centre for Statistics and Information; and 32 Harmonised System chapters of bio-based trade from UN Comtrade. The workbook is organised in five categories, navigation, analysed, summaries, cleaned and raw, with a provenance block on every sheet stating source, endpoint, retrieval date, unit of measurement and primary key, and a glossary defining every abbreviation and machine column name. One sheet rebuilds the composite index from its raw indicator values entirely in live spreadsheet formulas, reproducing the published scores to within 4.9 x 10-5, so a user can change a normalisation, a sign or a weight and see the consequence without re-deriving the instrument. Thirty-seven native charts are drawn from the cells beside them. All retrievals were made between 17 and 19 August 2026, with a verification pass on 2 September 2026. GBIF and OBIS are live indexes and their counts drift; the verification pass measured 0.25% growth over 16 days, so every figure is stated with its retrieval date and the pipeline is provided so the whole assessment can be re-run rather than quoted.
