Capital Controls Dataset (CCDS) : A Granular Dataset of Capital Account Restrictions
Description
The Capital Controls Dataset (CCDS) is a granular annual cross-country panel of capital account restrictions constructed from the IMF’s Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions (AREAER). The dataset distinguishes restrictions across several dimensions, including asset class, direction of flows, transaction type, and residency status. The dataset is designed to support empirical research on the measurement, determinants, and effectiveness of capital controls and capital flow management measures (CFMs). In particular, the CCDS allows researchers to examine whether the effects of capital controls differ depending on whether measures target residents or nonresidents, inflows or outflows, and debt-like or equity-like transactions. The dataset is designed to support empirical research on the measurement, determinants, and effectiveness of capital controls and capital flow management measures (CFMs). In particular, the CCDS makes it possible to examine whether the effects of capital controls vary by residency status, flow direction, and the nature of the underlying transaction (debt-like versus equity-like).
