The main expectation was that digital-native outlets would provide more contextualized and interpretive accounts of the protests, with greater attention to their causes, social demands, and actors, whereas traditional media would rely more heavily on episodic coverage and frames associated with conflict, public order, and the immediate consequences of protest events. The dataset contains 1,426 news publications produced by Colombian digital media outlets during the 2021 National Strike. The material was collected from news published in connection with the protests and analyzed through a systematic quantitative content analysis. The unit of analysis was the individual news publication. A structured codebook was developed to identify several dimensions of media coverage, including narrative framing, thematic framing, interpretive framing, protest repertoires, forms of repression and containment, sources, and patterns of visibility and positioning of the actors involved. Coding was conducted by a trained team of coders following several pilot exercises and intercoder reliability assessments. The data show meaningful differences in the way traditional and digital-native outlets represented the protests. Digital-native media tended to provide more contextual and interpretive coverage, particularly by emphasizing the causes of the mobilization and evaluations of the events. Traditional media, by contrast, devoted greater attention to the consequences of protest and more frequently framed demonstrations through issues of security, public order, and conflict. These patterns suggest that media type is associated with distinct forms of constructing the legitimacy, demands, actors, and consequences of social protest. The dataset can be used to examine relationships between media type and specific characteristics of protest coverage, compare framing and sourcing practices, analyze the visibility of different protest actors and repertoires, and study how journalistic representations may contribute to the mediated construction of protest legitimacy. Variables should be interpreted as categorical indicators derived from the coding protocol rather than as direct measures of public opinion or protesters’ behavior. The data therefore describe media representations of the 2021 National Strike, not the protests themselves.
