Dataset used in the paper titled: You talking to me?’: testing the role of visual–acoustic cues in anemonefish social behaviour We conducted field experiments on wild orange anemonefish (Amphiprion percula), using mirrors and sound playbacks to simulate intrusion by a conspecific of larger, similar or smaller size relative to the focal fish. To compare the importance of visual and acoustic cues, we used three treatments: congruent cues (both cues manipulated), constant acoustic cues (only visual cues manipulated) and constant visual cues (only acoustic cues manipulated).

Description of the headers: • Reef: name of the reef where the anemone/anemonefish group was located (e.g. First, HG, LL) • ID: Tag number of the anemone/anemonefish group (e.g. B29, SY517, LY90) • Treatment: experimental treatment from which the data was collected, either congruent visual-acoustic cues manipulation (congruent cues), acoustic cues manipulation keeping visual cues constant (constant visual), or visual cues manipulation keeping acoustic cues constant (constant audio) • Cues: size of the experimental cues used in the experiment in relation to the focal individual, either larger (large), smaller (small), or similar-sized (normal) • Size: standard length of the focal individual • agr.min: number of aggressive displays per minute of observation time • sub.min: number of submissive displays per minute of observation time • ter.min: number of territorial displays per minute of observation time • lat.min: number of lateral displays per minute of observation time
