Migratory Birds Reported at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh: A Compiled News-Based Species Dataset
Description
This dataset compiles reported information on migratory and winter-visitor birds observed at Jahangirnagar University (JU), Bangladesh, based on publicly reported news and related source materials. The dataset documents locally reported bird names, probable English common names, probable scientific names, reported geographic origins, and relevant notes concerning their occurrence and seasonal presence at the university campus. The dataset contains 24 bird records and 5 variables. It is intended to provide a structured and reusable resource for researchers interested in migratory bird diversity, seasonal bird occurrence, urban and campus biodiversity, avian ecology, environmental change, and conservation in Bangladesh. The variables include the locally reported Bangla name of each bird, its probable English common name, probable scientific name, reported geographic origin, and contextual notes regarding abundance, recurrence, or migration status. The terms “probable” are retained where species identification or taxonomic attribution was inferred from the reported information rather than independently verified through field-based taxonomic assessment. This dataset was compiled and structurally organized from reported information. It should therefore be interpreted as a secondary, news-based compilation rather than a systematic field survey or comprehensive species inventory of Jahangirnagar University. The dataset does not establish population size, abundance trends, migration routes, or long-term occurrence patterns. The dataset may serve as a preliminary evidence base for biodiversity research, exploratory species inventories, conservation planning, ecological reviews, and the development of future field-based studies at Jahangirnagar University and comparable habitats in Bangladesh. Researchers are encouraged to independently verify species identities, migratory status, geographic origins, and current occurrence using authoritative ornithological sources and field observations before drawing ecological or conservation conclusions. The dataset is provided in a structured tabular format to facilitate reuse, further validation, and integration with future biodiversity and avian research datasets.
