Steps to reproduce

Refer to "README.docx" in the main folder. STEP 1: PREPARE DATA: • Replace the randomized data files in the "data" folder with the actual data. STEP 2: PYTHON CODE AND FIGURE 1 • Install Python 3.11.5 and the packages in “python_code\requirements.txt”. • Run “python_code\generate_figure_1.py” using Python. • Figure 1 is outputted to “paper\figures\figure_1.png”. • Run “python_code\pre_process_burgiss_data.py” using Python. The weights of the counterfactual portfolios are outputted to “processed\msci_burgiss_with_weights.csv”. STEP 3: MSCI-BURGISS DATA • Install Stata 16.1 and required packages in “code\requirements.txt”. • Run the Stata code provided in “code\code for T5.do”. Due to MSCI-Burgiss access restrictions, this regression may only be possible by providing MSCI-Burgiss staff with weights in “processed\msci_burgiss_with_weights.csv” and the code “code\code for T5.do”. • Table 5 content is outputted to “paper\tables” • Replace “processed\msci_burgiss_summary.xlsx” with the output of this operation. STEP 4: STATA CODE AND ALL TABLES • Install Stata 16.1 and required packages in “code\requirements.txt”. • Run “code\code for T1, T2, T3.do”. • Run “code\code for T1, T4, T6, T7, T8.do”. • Tables 1-4 and 6-8 content is outputted to “paper\tables” STEP 5: FIGURES 2 AND 3 • Open “paper\figures\figure_2.xls” and export Figure 2. • Open “paper\figures\figure_3.xls”, refresh the Pivot Tables in cells B8 and T8, and export Figure 3. STEP 6: FIGURE 4 • Import “data\foia_map_data.txt” into the tool at www.mapchart.net.
