Measurements and statistical analysis of surface hardness of bis-acrylic resins under different conditions.

This dataset contains Rockwell hardness measurements (HRA) of two bis-acrylic resins, 3M™ ESPE Protemp™ 4 and FGM Primma Art, tested under two different conditions: moist and dry after seven days. A total of 40 samples were analyzed, with 10 samples per condition. The data include minimum, maximum, mean hardness values, and standard deviations. Statistical analyses, including Shapiro-Wilk, Levene’s test, and Student’s t-test, were performed to compare groups.

Steps to reproduce
The samples were made using two commercial bis-acrylic resins: 3M ESPE Protemp™ 4 and FGM Primma Art. A total of 40 cylinders were prepared, divided equally between both resins and exposed to two environmental conditions: humidity and non-humidity, for seven days. Each sample was subjected to three hardness measurements (also called indentations) also using an ESEWAY Rockwell hardness tester, type R2, using the A scale, with a conical diamond indenter of 120° vertex angle, rounded at the tip, and a total load of 60 kgf. The procedure was carried out in accordance with the guidelines established in the ASTM E18-22 and ISO 6508-1:2023 standards, which define the method for determining Rockwell hardness in metallic materials. Although bis-acrylic resins are not metals, this scale was used because it is indicated for hard or semi-hard materials and allows for more accurate and repeatable estimation of wear resistance, a property indicative of surface hardness in dentistry. In contrast, the Rockwell scale for plastic materials was not considered, since, as stipulated in these regulations, its results are of a relative and experimental nature, and do not allow a direct evaluation of wear resistance. In addition, both regulations recognize that the same material can yield different results depending on the scale used, all of which are valid within the corresponding methodological context. The data obtained were processed using IBM® SPSS® Statistics 26.0 and Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (version 2404). Normality tests (Shapiro-Wilk), homogeneity of variances (Levene) and comparison of means (t-test for independent samples, assuming equality of variances and another t-test for independent samples, assuming inequality of variances) were applied.
