City-level data and documentary evidence for wastewater demand assessment in China
Description
This dataset supports the study “Revisiting wastewater demand assumptions under demographic change: evidence from Chinese cities.” It brings together city-level statistical inputs, derived observation windows, supplementary statistical results, and documentary evidence used to examine wastewater demand assumptions. The annual inputs cover wastewater treatment capacity, treatment volumes, reported discharge, sewer networks, population, and urban area in Chinese cities during 2012–2024. Population and urban-area coverage extends through 2022. Urban construction statistics originate from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China; economic controls originate from CSMAR and China City Statistical Yearbooks. The construction-statistics population measure retains its source definition and is distinguished from resident-population measures. The archive includes derived observation windows for 2015–2022, sample-selection indicators, targeted official population comparisons, sample-composition results, city-cluster resampling intervals, and sensitivity checks for the accounting decomposition of treatment-volume changes. It also contains structured evidence and assessment records for Shizuishan and Sanya, with source references, geographic and temporal scope, and conditions for reconsidering demand and capacity assumptions. The README, variable dictionary, supplementary field descriptions, and resampling protocol explain the data structure, units, sample definitions, and statistical procedures. Documentary records retain their original geographic coverage and are not merged into the city-level regression data. A file manifest and SHA-256 checksums are provided for version identification and file-integrity verification.
