Global Crayfish Database of Geospatial Traits
Description
This dataset provides a global, network-aware environmental trait database for freshwater crayfish (Decapoda: Astacidea). It integrates 115,191 georeferenced occurrence records from the World of Crayfish® (WoC®) platform with approximately 400 environmental variables extracted through the GeoFRESH framework, using the Hydrography90m river network at 90 m resolution. Environmental variables span climate, topography, soil, and land cover at both local (segment-level) and upstream (catchment-aggregated) scales. Following quality filtering, 65,957 records across 273 taxa from all three extant families (Astacidae, Cambaridae, Parastacidae) were retained for species-level statistical synthesis, yielding over 8,000 data points per taxon. Geographic coordinates are withheld under the WoC® community data protocol for species protection. Steps to reproduce
1. Occurrence records extracted from World of Crayfish® (WoC®) platform (extraction date: 30 September 2025). 2. Records snapped to nearest Hydrography90m stream segments using distance-based spatial matching in R v4.5.1 (sf package v1.0.23, WGS84/EPSG:4326, geodesic geometry). 3. Environmental variables (~400) extracted offline from GeoFRESH datasets at Local (90 m segment) and Upstream (catchment-aggregated) scales across four domains: Climate, Topography, Soil, Land Cover. 4. Sequential quality filtering: unassigned taxa removed → Low Accuracy records removed → records >1 km from nearest segment excluded → deduplicated by Hydrography90m segment per taxon → taxa with <10 records excluded. Final dataset: 65,957 records, 273 taxa. 5. Twenty statistical descriptors computed per taxon per variable (n, SE, CV, min, max, mean, median, range, SD, skewness, kurtosis, IQR, MAD, Q05, Q25, Q75, Q95, occupied range, occupied IQR, standardised range, standardised IQR).
