Seismic-electromagnetic signals from two monitoring stations in Southern Italy: time series release

Description

This data-set contains electromagnetic time series acquired by multicomponent monitoring stations in Southern Italy and containing seismic-electromagnetic signature. These signals are so defined because they consist of electromagnetic transients associated with the passage of a seismic wave. Phenomenology is attributable, with a good approximation, to electrokinetic effects at the solid-fluid interface in porous media. It has therefore a high potential for fluid detection and tracking. The growing interest in the method results in an increasing number of laboratory or field experiments with active seismic sources, as well as numerical models. Observations of these signals related to natural earthquakes, however, are insufficient to define their detection characteristics and their use. In order to fill this gap, two monitoring stations were located in two seismically active areas of southern Italy: the Gargano Promontory and the High Agri Valley. Here, as mentioned above, we present the seismic-electromagnetic signals detected so far. Here is a list of useful information: 1) Waveforms have currently only been recorded from the station in the High Agri Valley (TRAMC). No signal has been recorded yet from the station of the Gargano Promontory (GPO); 2) Electromagnetic time series are contained in folders .zip where the name coincides with the event date of each event. Each folder contains the electromagnetic series at the original sampling rate in the .ats format, a control file with the .xml extension, and the corresponding time series in ASCII format, deconvolved for instrumental response. 3) In addition to the original time series there are also ones sampled at lower frequencies specified in the subfolder titles of each event; 4) The data-set also includes a .rtf file with the coordinates of the TRAMC and a worksheet .xlsx containing information about each registered event.

Steps to reproduce

The data has been acquired by a magnetotelluric station, so you will find electromagnetic time series. To convert the original data to ASCII format and resample them at lower frequencies, the software package provided by the instrument manufacturer (Metronix Geophysics - DE) was used. For the analysis of seismic-electromagnetic signals in time and frequency we strongly recommend the robust processing proposed by Romano et al., 2018 entitled "Robust analysis for the characterization of the Seismo-Electromagnetic Signals observed in Southern Italy". This mainly consists in the use of wavelet analysis and filters suitable to enhance the transient without changing their amplitude characteristics.
