This dataset supports the article “Disentangling form and material effects: a 2×2 EnergyPlus study of operational energy and CO₂ in a Qajar caravanserai.” It contains the input, output, and plotting files used in the study, including: Clean BIM-based geometry exported from Revit to DesignBuilder/EnergyPlus; Envelope properties (U-values, areal heat capacity, layer thickness, density, conductivity, specific heat); Infiltration and ventilation parameters (ACH_nat values by typology); Internal gains, lighting, and comfort setpoints; Annual electricity results (MWh, kWh/m²·yr) and corresponding operational CO₂ (tCO₂e, kgCO₂e/m²·yr) for four configurations (TT, TM, MT, MM — T = traditional, M = modern); One-factor sensitivity tests (thermal mass ±25%, infiltration ±50%, WWR ±10 p.p., shading ±25%); Python/Excel plotting scripts for Figures 4–8. All simulations were performed using DesignBuilder/EnergyPlus v23.x under the TMYx 2009–2023 weather file for Khorramabad, Iran. The dataset ensures full transparency and reproducibility of the study’s findings.

Steps to reproduce
Open the BIM model provided (Revit/DesignBuilder format) and confirm geometry and zoning according to the legend. Load the four configuration sets (TT, TM, MT, MM) with their respective construction templates (traditional vs. modern materials). Import the TMYx 2009–2023 weather file for Khorramabad, Iran. Verify infiltration, internal gains, and setpoints as listed in the supplementary documentation (S1–S10). Run annual simulations in DesignBuilder/EnergyPlus v23.x using identical schedules and HVAC assumptions. Export total electricity consumption and calculate operational CO₂ using the fixed grid emission factor (0.63 kg CO₂/kWh). Optionally, vary one factor at a time (thermal mass ±25%, infiltration ±50%, WWR ±10 p.p., shading ±25%) to reproduce the sensitivity results.
