Description

This dataset contains the main research data from a study examining how Zingiber officinale (ginger) extract may influence the effects of monosodium glutamate (MSG) on the liver of adult Wistar rats. Forty-eight rats were divided into six groups and treated for 21 days with either MSG, different doses of ginger extract, a combination of MSG and ginger, or no treatment beyond standard feed and water. The dataset includes changes in body weight, liver weight and relative liver weight, serum ALT, AST and ALP levels, as well as the histological observations recorded from liver tissue. Results are presented as reported in the original study, using mean ± SEM where applicable. Where individual-animal measurements were not available, no values were estimated or reconstructed.

Adult Wistar rats were divided into six groups of eight animals. Group A served as the control and received standard feed and water, while Group B received MSG at 4 mg/kg body weight. Groups C and D received ginger extract at 1 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg body weight, respectively. Groups E and F received MSG at 4 mg/kg together with ginger extract at 1 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg, respectively. The treatments were given for 21 days. Body weight was recorded weekly throughout the study. At the end of the treatment period, the animals were sacrificed, and their livers were collected and weighed. Liver samples were processed using routine histological methods, stained with haematoxylin and eosin (H&E), and examined under a light microscope. Serum ALT, AST and ALP activities were also measured to assess changes in liver enzyme activity. The results were reported as mean ± SEM where applicable. Student’s t-test was used for the statistical analysis, with p < 0.05 set as the threshold for statistical significance.
