From Objective Reason to Instrumental Rationality: Epistemological and Methodological Appraisal of Reviewed Studies Based on the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT)

Description

This dataset is the product of a systematic review conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 flow diagram. Searches across two databases—Web of Science (n = 485) and ScienceDirect (n = 87)—yielded a total of 572 initial records. After removing 43 duplicates, 529 records remained and were screened based on title and abstract. During the screening stage, records were excluded based on several criteria: publication year prior to 2015 (n = 127), non-English language (n = 64), review articles (n = 19), conference proceedings (n = 46), and notes/errata/empty entries (n = 20); this left 253 reports for which full texts were sought to assess their further eligibility. The final selection process resulted in 67 eligible articles included in the review, as detailed in the MMAT (Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool) table within the Excel file. This table summarizes the epistemological and methodological assessments of the 67 studies, covering information such as author/year, title, study design (predominantly qualitative), country of origin, research objectives, key findings, and MMAT criteria ratings (S1, S2, and Criteria 1–5), alongside additional thematic columns addressing epistemological developments, inter-epistemic relations, and policy implications regarding artificial intelligence (AI).
