EVALUATION OF ANTIMICROBIAL PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY APPLICATION IN TISSUE REPAIR ON THE DORSUM OF RAT TONGUES
Description
Traumatic oral ulcers are common lesions and the search for treatments that accelerate the healing process is a constant interest of the scientific community. Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) has as its basic principle the eradication of microorganisms, which, consequently, favors tissue repair. The objective of this study was to evaluate histologically the effect of aPDT on tissue repair in the dorsum of the tongue of rats. A total of 45 male Wistar rats underwent a standardized ulcer on the dorsum of the tongue with a 5 mm diameter punch and were randomly divided in three groups: Control (G1), Laser photobiomodulation - LPBM (G2) and aPDT (G3). Euthanasia was performed and the evaluation of inflammatory characteristics were performed in sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin, and characterization of total collagen were performed with sections with Red Sirius. Histomorphometric analyzes of the percentage of total collagen, the distance from the basal layer to the epithelial surface and the thickness of the stratum corneum were performed. Histomorphological analysis demonstrated that the LPBM group (G2) positively modulated the phases of tissue repair. The control group (G1) showed slightly better histomorphological outcomes than the aPDT group (G3). In contrast, histomorphometric analysis did not reveal significant differences among the groups. The aPDT did not promote a positive effect on tissue repair in the rat tongue, whereas LPBM was associated with more favorable outcomes.
