Description

This study utilized pooled cross-sectional data from the China Netizens Social Awareness Survey (CNSAS, 2017) and the China Netizens Social Awareness Survey (CNSAS, 2018) conducted under the supervision of Professor Deyong Ma at Renmin University of China. The CNSAS surveys were fielded in two waves: April-May 2017 and August 2018. Each wave encompassed 33 provincial-level administrative regions across China. The CNSAS 2017 incorporates the following variables: (1) The dependent variable includes Public Service Motivation (PSM), competence, relatedness and socialization. PSM is measured by four sub-dimensions: Achievement Motivation (APM), Commitment to Professional Values (CPV), Commitment to Organizational Mission (COM). (2) The independent variable includes Internet use, measured by collective involvement in online political news (CIOPN), individual involvement in online political news (IIOPN), collective involvement in online political expression (CIOPE), and individual involvement in online political expression (IIOPE). (3) The control variables includes age, political affiliation, gender, income level, and educational attainment. The CNSAS 2018 includes all thses variables except cocialization. Due to this data similarities, we combine both years into a pooled cross-sectional dataset. We selected 956 government employees and staff from public institutions ("Shiye danwei") for analysis. The main text uses variables from the pooled data, as detailed in "Main text (1) - The Impact of Internet Use on Public Sector Employees' Public Service Motivation: Empirical Evidence from Digital Service Delivery in China," and variables from the 2017 data, as shown in "Main text (2) - The Impact of Internet Use on Public Sector Employees' Public Service Motivation: Empirical Evidence from Digital Service Delivery in China." The appendix using variables from the pooled cross-sectional data, as presented in "Appendix - The Impact of Internet Use on Public Sector Employees' Public Service Motivation: Empirical Evidence from Digital Service Delivery in China."
