Description

This dataset contains the data used in the analysis of adoption and perceptions of Generative AI tools in engineering education, associated with the article "Adoption and Perceptions of AI Tools in Engineering Education." The dataset comprises two primary sources: - Survey Data (2023): Responses from a survey conducted with engineering students and professionals in Colombia. It captures demographic information (age, gender, employment status, place of birth), levels of knowledge about AI, awareness and use of ChatGPT, frequency of use, perceived usefulness, and willingness to recommend its use in professional training. - Survey Data (2025): Responses from a follow-up survey expanding the scope to Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini. It includes demographic and contextual variables (age, gender, place of residence), tools utilized, subscription models, frequency of use, academic activities supported, verification practices, perceived usefulness, impact on critical thinking and problem-solving, and recommendations for ethical integration in engineering education. The dataset also includes the R script (Script_AI_Tools_Education.R) required to reproduce the descriptive figures and the logistic regression model presented in the study. The README.txt file provides a detailed guide to the variables and instructions for running the script.

Data Collection Methodology The dataset was obtained through two structured surveys conducted in 2023 and 2025, designed to capture perceptions and adoption of Generative AI tools in engineering education. - Survey 2023: The first survey was administered in 2023 at the Instituto Tecnológico Metropolitano (ITM) in Medellín, Colombia, with a sample of 65 students from the Quality Engineering and Production Engineering programs. A custom-designed questionnaire was developed and subjected to peer review by three independent researchers to ensure clarity, relevance, and validity. The instrument included questions on awareness of ChatGPT, frequency of use, perceived utility, and barriers to adoption in professional training. Data confidentiality was guaranteed by anonymizing responses and complying with ethical research regulations. The survey was distributed via Google Forms, a widely accessible online platform, and descriptors for each item were provided to guide participants. - Survey 2025: A pilot survey was conducted in 2025 with a sample of 30 students, following the same methodological protocol as the 2023 survey. The instrument expanded the scope to include broader Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini), subscription models, academic applications, verification practices, and perceived impacts on professional development and critical thinking. The survey was likewise peer-reviewed and administered through Google Forms, ensuring methodological consistency and comparability across both datasets. Both surveys were validated using a triangulation method involving three independent researchers, which increased the reliability and robustness of the collected data. The resulting dataset is structured into two sheets (Survey_2023 and Survey_2025) within the file Survey_results_2023_and_2025.xlsx, and is accompanied by an R script to reproduce the descriptive analyses and logistic regression models presented in the study.
