Exploring Households' Willingness to Pay for Clean Water in Karachi
Description
This dataset contains household-level survey data collected to estimate willingness to pay (WTP) for improvements in piped water quality and pressure in Karachi, Pakistan. Data were gathered through a city-wide household survey administered in two seasonal rounds — November 2021 to February 2022 and June to July 2022 — allowing observation of responses under different conditions of water demand and supply. The sampling design was stratified random across Karachi's six main administrative districts (East, West, South, Central, Malir, and Korangi), with cantonment areas excluded as they fall outside the utility's service boundary. Strata were weighted using population figures from the 2017 Pakistan Census; one town was randomly selected within each district, followed by five Union Councils per town and between six and nine households per Union Council, with proportional allocation across strata. Of 1,010 surveys administered, 990 are complete and usable, and are included here.
