Prevalence of cementoblast dysplasia in the Dominican population visiting the diagnostic department of the Dr. René Puig Bentz Dental Clinic at Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University
Description
The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of cementoblast dysplasia in the Dominican population visiting the diagnostic department of the Dr. René Puig Bentz Dental Clinic (UNPHU). A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 224 patients, evaluated through clinical and radiographic examination, following previously established inclusion criteria. As a result, 10 cases of cemento-osseous dysplasia were identified, representing a prevalence of 4.5%, indicating a low frequency of this condition in the studied population. A marked predominance was observed among females (90%), with higher frequency in adults, especially in patients of middle and advanced age. The most common type was focal dysplasia (50%), followed by florid dysplasia (30%) and periapical dysplasia (20%). Regarding the stages of maturation, the mixed and radiopaque stages predominated (40% each), suggesting diagnosis at intermediate or advanced stages of lesion development. The mandible was the most frequent site (70%), and most lesions were asymptomatic, with a smooth surface, regular shape, and small size, exhibiting uniform clinical characteristics and stable biological behavior, and were detected primarily as incidental findings on routine radiographic studies. In conclusion, cementoblastoma has a low prevalence in the Dominican population, with a higher incidence in adult women and a predominance of the focal type. These findings highlight the importance of an adequate clinical and radiographic diagnosis to avoid unnecessary treatments and improve outcomes.
