Institutionalised Multilingual Development in a Structured Chinese-Learning Programme: Foreign Government Officials in China
Description
This repository contains de-identified derived materials supporting the analyses reported in the article manuscript, "Institutionalised Multilingual Development in a Structured Chinese-Learning Programme: Foreign Government Officials in China". The files include aggregated coding summaries, direct relation count tables used in the appendix, and the scripts used to generate these derived materials. Raw interview transcripts are not included because they contain potentially identifiable qualitative material and are subject to confidentiality and ethics restrictions. ## Included files ### De-identified coding-table exports - `supplementary_case_summary.csv` - `supplementary_axial_categories.csv` - `supplementary_axial_relations.csv` - `supplementary_selective_core.csv` - `supplementary_selective_modules.csv` - `supplementary_selective_narratives.csv` - `supplementary_selective_propositions.csv` These CSV files are the public de-identified derivative tables exported from the structured coding outputs. ### Appendix-level derived outputs - `appendix_table_a2_direct_counts.csv` - `appendix_table_a3_stage_totals.csv` These CSV files are the appendix-level analytical outputs derived from the de-identified coding-table exports. ### Scripts - `export_supplementary_csv.py` - `compute_appendix_direct_relations.py` These scripts document how the public derivative tables and appendix-level outputs were generated.

Steps to reproduce
## Script functions - `export_supplementary_csv.py`: converts the de-identified structured coding JSON files into the CSV tables deposited in this package, including the axial-category, axial-relation, selective-core, selective-module, selective-narrative, and case-summary exports. - `compute_appendix_direct_relations.py`: reads `supplementary_selective_modules.csv`, `supplementary_axial_relations.csv`, and `supplementary_axial_categories.csv`; maps coded items onto the reduced finding-level nodes used in the manuscript appendix; and generates `appendix_table_a2_direct_counts.csv` and `appendix_table_a3_stage_totals.csv`. These scripts are included to document how the deposited derivative tables were produced from the de-identified coding outputs. They support reproducibility at the level of analytical aggregation rather than re-identification of the underlying interview materials. ## Processing overview The deposited derivative files were produced in two stages: 1. `export_supplementary_csv.py` was used to convert the de-identified structured coding outputs into the public CSV tables included in this package. 2. `compute_appendix_direct_relations.py` was then used to derive the appendix-level direct relation counts from the exported selective-module and axial-relation CSV files. In practical terms, the processing sequence was: 1. Read the de-identified coding JSON files. 2. Export case-level and coding-level derivative tables as `supplementary_*.csv`. 3. Read `supplementary_selective_modules.csv`, `supplementary_axial_relations.csv`, and `supplementary_axial_categories.csv`. 4. Map coded items onto the reduced analytical nodes used for the appendix. 5. Count forward adjacent direct relations and aggregate them into `appendix_table_a2_direct_counts.csv`. 6. Sum the A2 counts by stage transition to produce `appendix_table_a3_stage_totals.csv`. This sequence is documented so that readers can see how the deposited appendix tables relate to the deposited coding summaries. It should be read as a transparency and reproducibility aid for the de-identified derivative materials, not as a release of the underlying raw interview data. ## Scope These files are derived, de-identified analytical outputs. They are provided to support transparency and reproducibility at the level of coding summaries, analytical aggregation, and appendix-level direct relation counting without disclosing raw qualitative transcripts. ## Not included - Raw interview transcripts - `supplementary_open_units.csv` - `supplementary_open_codes_long.csv` These materials were excluded because they contain or closely preserve potentially identifiable qualitative material and therefore remain subject to participant confidentiality and ethics restrictions. ## Ethics The underlying study received ethics approval from the Ethics Committee of the Medical College, Huaqiao University (Approval No. M2025039).
