Data and code for a systematic review of tourism dependence, external shocks and macroeconomic vulnerability in emerging markets
Description
This dataset contains the search records, screening decisions, coded corpus, analysis code and figures underlying a PRISMA 2020 systematic review of the evidence on whether dependence on international tourism amplifies macroeconomic vulnerability to external shocks, and on whether economic diversification buffers that effect in emerging markets. A single Boolean search equation combining three concept blocks — tourism, dependence or specialization, and macroeconomic outcomes — was run with full retrieval in Scopus and Web of Science, yielding 676 unique records after deduplication by DOI and normalized title. Each record was screened against five inclusion criteria and a closed list of eight exclusion reasons, and every decision is reported here with its reason. After screening and a declared scope rule requiring peer-reviewed articles with multi-country designs and emerging, developing or mixed samples, 120 studies published between 2004 and 2026 were included, 40 of them read in full text. Each study is coded along seven non-exclusive thematic axes (tourism dependence, external shock, volatility, economic growth, moderator, nonlinearity and structural change), by type of evidence, estimation approach, type of moderator tested and sample region. The files allow the PRISMA flow counts, the corpus and all seventeen figures of the article to be reproduced. Full texts of the reviewed studies are not included for copyright reasons; each study is identified by its DOI.
