Scopus Dataset for "Mapping Two Decades of Community of Inquiry Research in Online and Blended Higher Education: A Bibliometric Analysis"

Description

This dataset contains the cleaned and harmonised Scopus-indexed records (N = 214) used for bibliometric analysis of Community of Inquiry research in online and blended higher education (2006–2026). The dataset includes bibliographic metadata, citation counts, author affiliations, and keywords. Data were processed using OpenRefine, biblioMagika®, and VOSviewer.

Steps to reproduce

Access the Scopus database and enter the following search query: TITLE-ABS-KEY ("community of inquiry" OR "CoI" OR "communities of inquiry") AND ("online learning" OR "online education" OR "blended learning" OR "blended education" OR "hybrid learning" OR "hybrid instruction") AND ("higher education" OR "university" OR "college" OR "tertiary education" OR "postsecondary") Apply the following filters: peer-reviewed journal articles, English language, and final publication stage. The search initially identified 500 records. Following PRISMA-guided screening, 114 non-article documents were excluded. After retrieval and eligibility assessment (excluding non-English and non-final stage publications), the final dataset comprised 214 journal articles. Export the final records from Scopus in CSV format including full bibliographic metadata. Clean and harmonise the dataset using Microsoft Excel, OpenRefine, and biblioMagika® to standardise author names, affiliations, country information, and keyword variants. For keyword co-occurrence analysis, import the cleaned CSV file into VOSviewer. Select “Create a map based on bibliographic data,” choose “Co-occurrence,” and set the unit of analysis to Author Keywords. Apply full counting and set the minimum keyword occurrence threshold to 4. A total of 54 keywords will meet this threshold and can be used to generate the network visualisation. Note that citation counts may vary due to ongoing Scopus database updates.
