Origin-Country Social Protection and Migration Intentions: Causal Evidence from Tunisia
Description
This dataset and code package reproduces all empirical analyses presented in the article “Origin-Country Social Protection and Migration Intentions: Causal Evidence from Tunisia” by Fares Ben Youssef, Mohamed Kriaa, and Julie Le Gallo (revise and resubmit, Economic Modelling). The replication archive contains all Stata scripts, cleaned data, and documentation required to reproduce the descriptive statistics, figures, and causal inference results reported in the paper. The analysis investigates how two forms of social protection in Tunisia—state-assisted welfare and contributory insurance—affect individuals’ migration intentions, using nationally representative microdata from the 2021 Tunisia–HIMS survey. The package includes: README (LaTeX/PDF) describing data construction, model specifications, and replication workflow. Code folder with Stata .do files for data cleaning, weighting, IPWRA and DDML estimations, heterogeneity, and robustness checks (including propensity-score trimming and Oster bounds). Cleaned dataset (hims_employed_clean.dta) generated directly from the official INS microdata. Replication ZIP archive containing all scripts and documentation. Link to the original dataset hosted by the Institut National de la Statistique (INS): https://ins.tn/enquetes/enquete-nationale-sur-la-migration-internationale-tunisia-hims The original raw data (Tunisia HIMS 2021, Non-Migrants Module) are publicly available from the INS website and are not redistributed here for licensing reasons. All scripts in this package reproduce the analytical dataset and published results exactly from the public file.
