Description

R script used to analyze the presence of Aristolochia clematitis plant in relation to geographic distribution of Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN). The dataset on the plant distribution was downloaded from gbif.org and biologer.org. The data on BEN endemic settlements was compiled using all the available literature and observational data.

The dataset on Aristolochia clematitis has been obtained from Biologer and GBIF. The data on Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN) has been obtained from various literature (Denda & Stojanović, 2015; Dimitrov et al., 2001; Gluhovschi et al., 2002; Nikolić, 2012; Ristić et al., 2012; Stašević et al., 2008; Suša et al., 2011; Trnacevic et al., 2002; Vuković, 2015). New data about endemic settlements in Romania was supplemented by our personal observations from a 2015 field trip, where we obtained a list of BEN patients on dialysis from the Renamed Centre. The included R script describes how the data has been used to predict Aristolochia clematitis and BEN presence.
