Description

This repository contains the code and data provenance documentation supporting the review article "Empowering Sustainable Vertical Farming Through IoT and AI-Driven Technologies: A Technical Blueprint with Insights from the UK and India" . As a systematic PRISMA-based literature review, the study does not involve original experimental or primary data collection; instead, all quantitative values used in the manuscript's tables and figures were extracted and synthesised from previously published peer-reviewed literature, industry reports, and government/institutional publications through a four-stage process of extraction, cross-validation, standardisation, and weighted averaging, with full source citations provided in the manuscript. This repository includes the Jupyter notebook (vf_final_images.ipynb) used to generate the manuscript's illustrative figures (urban population/arable land/VF adoption trends, soilless cultivation technology performance comparisons, the multi-layer IoT architecture diagram, and the UK–India comparative climate, market, and consumer analysis charts) from these literature-derived values, along with a README documenting data provenance, methodology, and reproduction instructions.

Steps to reproduce

Install Python 3.9+ and the required packages: pip install matplotlib numpy pandas seaborn graphviz cartopy (Graphviz also requires the system-level Graphviz binary to be installed separately for diagram rendering). Open vf_final_images.ipynb in Jupyter Notebook or JupyterLab. Run the cells sequentially from top to bottom. Each markdown header labels which manuscript figure(s) the following code cell reproduces: Cell 1 → Figure 2; Cells 3–4 → Figures 6, 7, 8; Cell 5 → Figure 9; Cell 7 → Figures 16–19. The underlying values plotted in each cell were manually compiled from the peer-reviewed literature, industry reports, and government publications cited in the manuscript (see manuscript Section II.E.4, "Referred Data Sources," and the corresponding in-text citations for each figure/table). Running all cells reproduces the manuscript's illustrative charts and diagrams as inline output.
