This supporting information includes detail analytical methods for U-Pb CA-ID-TIMS geochronology and total organic carbon (TOC) content (Text S1), total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations of black shales from the Chuanlinggou Formation, Kuancheng County (Tables S1), zircon U-Pb ages of tuffaceous ash beds within the ~1640 Ma black shales in the North China and North Australian cratons (Table S2) and summary of the ~1640 Ma LIPs and associated magmatic rocks in different cratons (Table S3).
