The dataset contains physiological and psychological measures from 20 adolescent canoe athletes (15 boys, 5 girls; M age = 14.3 ± 1.88 years). Each participant completed a reaction time (RT) task in a laboratory setting with heart rate (HR) recordings collected during three phases: baseline (5 min), RT task (5 min), and recovery (5 min). The dataset includes: 1) Demographics: age, sex; 2) Physiological measures: HR values for baseline, task, recovery; derived HR reactivity (task–recovery difference); 3) Anthropometric measure: body fat percentage; 4) Temperament traits: including shyness and other temperament dimensions; 5) Performance measures: RT trials, RT scores. - The dataset supports analyses of how temperament and adiposity predict HR reactivity during a psychomotor stress task.

Steps to reproduce

To reproduce this study, recruit 20 adolescent canoe athletes (approximately 15 males and 5 females, mean age ≈ 14 years) and collect demographic data along with body fat percentage using a standard method such as bioelectrical impedance or skinfold measurement. Assess temperament, including shyness, with a validated questionnaire. Conduct the experiment in a laboratory setting, recording heart rate (HR) continuously with a reliable device across three phases: a 5-minute seated baseline, a 5-minute computerized choice reaction time (RT) task, and a 5-minute seated recovery. Compute average HR values for each phase and define HR reactivity as the difference between mean HR during the task and recovery. Analyze associations between shyness, body fat, HR reactivity, and RT performance using bootstrapped Spearman correlations (e.g., 5000 resamples). Apply Lasso regression with five-fold cross-validation to identify main predictors of HR reactivity, and then test interaction terms (e.g., shyness × body fat percentage). Perform a stability analysis by repeating cross-validation 25 times to assess the consistency of predictors. Interpret results by examining whether shyness and adiposity independently, or in interaction, predict HR reactivity, and discuss their implications for stress vulnerability in adolescent athletes.
