Description

The Safety Risk Library is a database that integrates construction safety knowledge from multiple sources. It maps safety risk scenarios characterised by six data points based on a formalised ontology to appropriate treatments that can mitigate the risks at different design stages, facilitating the implementation of prevention through design. The data points that characterise a risk scenario are: risk category, which describes the type of risk that can occur in the scenario; risk location; element type; risk factor; construction scope; and associated activity. The associated treatments can be applied at different design stages from preliminary design to site work, and can have different types of impact to the risk: eliminate, reduce, control, or inform others about the risk. This database was developed as part of the Construction Risk Library project, and the risk scenarios and treatments were obtained from analysing press releases describing construction accidents, construction health and safety guidance and regulations, through focus group discussions and workshops with industry experts and academics in the construction health and safety domain, and through piloting a novel cloud-based BIM tool that implements the database and its data structure in live construction projects across the United Kingdom. This database is structured in ten columns, the first four describing the suggested treatment, and the remaining six characterising the related risk scenario.
