THE PROTECTION OF WOMEN IN GUATEMALA

Description

The paper analyzes the evolution and current state of the protection of women's rights in Guatemala. It highlights the enactment of specific laws such as the Law to Prevent, Punish, and Eradicate Domestic Violence, the Law on Femicide, and the Law against Sexual Violence, Exploitation, and Trafficking in Persons. These laws seek to protect women and other vulnerable groups against violence in family and public settings. However, the deeply rooted machista culture in Guatemala, together with the ineffectiveness of the judicial system and the lack of resources, prevents the effective implementation of these laws, thereby perpetuating violence and impunity. The article emphasizes the need for a robust institutional response and greater social awareness to address gender-based violence. It also refers to international and national efforts to promote gender equality and protect women's rights, although it recognizes that significant problems still persist. Sexual violence, exploitation, and trafficking in persons remain serious issues, exacerbated by discrimination and the lack of access to justice for victims.
