The EARLYDRAIN trial investigated whether prophylactic lumbar cerebrospinal fluid drainage improves clinical outcome measured by the modified Rankin Scale score among patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. 287 patients were randomized to receive either standard of care only or additionally a lumbar drain for the first 8 days after treatment of the aneurysm. Findings indicate that among patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, lumbar drainage additional to standard of care improves clinical neurological outcomes at 6 months.
