Research Landscape of AI-Based Digital Storytelling

AI-based digital storytelling is a new research field that merges artificial intelligence technologies with the creation, adaptation and delivery of digital narratives. The field includes many computational methods, like generative AI, large language models, intelligent virtual agents, interactive storytelling systems, and human-computer interaction to create more dynamic, immersive and personalized storytelling experiences. The growing popularity of digital storytelling based on AI is explained by the fast growth of AI technologies and the increasing need for interactive digital content and applications in educational, cultural and entertainment contexts. Such developments have moved AI from a simple assistant to an active participant in narrative creation, user interaction and artistic collaboration. The dataset is a collection of bibliographic records collected to analyze the research landscape of AI-based digital storytelling. The dataset enables the exploration of publication trends, thematic developments, intellectual structures, and future directions in the field.

Steps to reproduce

The data was collected from the Scopus database. The search procedure was conducted using the following search string: TITLE-ABS-KEY (("digital storytelling" OR "digital narrative" OR "digital story telling" OR "interactive storytelling") AND ("AI" OR "artificial intelligence" OR "machine learning" OR "deep learning")) AND (LIMIT-TO (DOCTYPE , "cp") OR LIMIT-TO (DOCTYPE , "ar" )) AND (LIMIT-TO (LANGUAGE , "English" )). The search was limited to publications between 2001 and 2026. Only journal articles and conference papers in English were selected. The inclusion criteria predefined were applied to screen the search results, resulting in a final data set of 611 documents related to AI-based digital storytelling research.
